Mixtape Monday (Thank Me Later No Drake)

Update: Damn…I finally finished this massive post, more mixtapes than I care to count, a little something for everyone, just goes to show you there is plenty of good music.  Shit me and Phrillz were just talking about there is too much.  Anyway, I hope you all enjoy.  Also I begrudgingly have to now announce i’m on Facebook and Twitter so check me out on there…or not.  I’m still mad I need to be on twitter to conduct business, but it’s whatever.  I’ll be dropping off more joints than you can probably imagine, and you can follow my shenanigans.  MY VIEWS ARE SOLELY THAT OF MYSELF AND THEY DO NOT MIRROR THE VIEWS OF OFFICIAL STREET RADIO OR UE RADIO.  I WAS NOT RAISED THIS WAY I’M JUST FUCKED UP IN THE HEAD.  I’ll be dropping off some Marco Polo joints tomorrow since his album is dropping along with some Jay Electronica and Joell Ortiz since i’m going to their concert tomorrow too.

I figured with the return of Mixtape Monday I would take a look back at some of my favorite mixtapes and albums from 2009.  Then, I remembered why I have not done this sooner and ultimately decided I would spread this shit over another week complete with a couple other mixtapes, videos, and streaming songs.  Until recently I haven’t really fucked with many local artists…I know, disgusting…in my defense I blame a couple…ahh fuck it no excuses.  All of that is quickly changing though.  Check out my favorite mixtapes below until I finish up the rest of this post hopefully next week.  Click the collage for the full size image of my favorite mixtapes and albums.

Download Mixtape: Pulse Of The People (Turn Off The Radio Vol. 3)

I never was the biggest Dead Prez fan but between this mixtape, produced by one of my favorite producers, Green Lantern and Stic-Man’s feature on Nas’ Nigger Mixtape i’ve become a fan…hey that’s what it was called.  This was easily one of my favorite mixtapes from last year, lyrics, production, etc. it has everything.  I’m looking forward to the new mixtape even if it hosted by DJ Drama…then speak of the devil this dropped out of nowhere later in the week.  That’s how it should be done, fuck mixtape release dates.  This mixtape also took me back a bit, not a whole lot of original beats just Dead Prez beating up other people’s beats.  While I know mixtapes have changed a lot over the years and i’ll throw Drake a bone for a second no homo, of course, because he did a pretty good job of articulating the way mixtapes have changed over the years.

However, I grew up on mixtapes where artists ripped up other people’s beats, but back then everyone didn’t rap and the internet wasn’t nearly as much of a factor in music that it is these days…I kind of miss those days.  Anyway, I still don’t understand how people can complain about free music especially when it’s from the likes of artists of the caliber of Dead Prez original beats or not.  I also forgot I had the first 2 mixtapes in the series so I added those as well.  The only other thing I have to say about Dead Prez is sometimes I feel like the messages in their music can detract from their music.  I wasn’t raised with those same views and my own life experiences have given me much different views than most people.  I guess i’m just fortunate in that respect, anyway it’s ironic that I would have the problem with the views that anyone expresses in their music considering some of the music I listen to lol.

The Clipse Mixtape that dropped before the album, I kinda think it’s better than the album.  I wish this would have been another Re-Up Gang Mixtape as oppose to just a Clipse Mixtape plus Ab-Liva…Shout out to Sandman, never met Ab Live unless you count me standing next to him being too pussy to talk…smh.

Download Mixtape: We Got It 4 Cheap Vol. 1

Ahh yes the classic mixtape series that introduced the world to the Re-Up Gang (Clipse and Hitmen (Ab-Liva and Sandman)).  It’s hard to say which artist was the best in group or which mixtape was the best.  They were all great and they pushed each other to make great music together.  Hopefully, they all ultimately realize that and mistakes were made by all parties and return to making great music.  I can tell you which project was the worst though ***climbs down off high horse*** that piece of shit Re-Up Gang album.  If you even want to call it that, I like to refer to it as We Got It 4 Cheaper Vol. 3.5 or the weak ass repackaged Vol. 3 with shitty ass soundclick beats.  No disrespect to soundclick beat makers, but how the fuck does your album have worst beats than your fucking mixtape and use THE SAME SONGS.  I’M NOT JUST TALKING VERSES BUT THE SAME SONGS!!!.  Also how the fuck does your first single not include the whole group.  If that was the case you shouldn’t even have called it a fucking Re-Up Gang album especially when the bulk of your fanbase LISTENS TO ALL YOUR MIXTAPES!!!  I’m not sure who green lit that idea, but that shit was insulting to me as a fan and really I can understand why Sandman would be mad.  However, it is might hope that they realize hey we made great music together, let’s get back together and get this money.  I won’t hold my breath though.  ***gets back on high horse*** Nonetheless, the first 3 mixtapes are classics, enjoy…I don’t even feel like posting any tracks…let’s just move on before I bring back the pile shit normally reserved for Young Money and Gucci Mane.  I’m sorry, i’m just a little pissed off right now ***puts on Sade***.

With a cooler head let’s also take a look at some stuff from The Hitmen, while The Clipse were headliners of The Re-Up Gang, I think The Hitmen were just as important to the success of the group.

I first heard Ab Liva back when I was in high school if I remember correctly, I have fond memories of banging some of those Cosmic Kev shows in my Sony Walkman when Beanie Sigel, Most Wanted, and Major Figgas first got on.

I remember mightily enjoying the Major Figgas in my younger days, but thinking it was a little too commercial for my taste even back then.  Aside from that album, which i’ll have to go back in listen to, and the We Got It For Cheap mixtapes I don’t have nearly enough Ab Liva music.  I would love to hear a whole project from the 6’9″ Done, I know he is working on a new project along with iCan so here’s a video from that project and a couple songs.  Hopefully, we see that or an Ab Liva mixtape/album very soon.

I first heard Sandman years later on some old CANNNNNOONNNNNSSS!!! mixtape, I love that shit.  I was immediately attracted to his flow and his CANNONS adlib always kills me, so I was happy when I heard he was working with The Clipse.  I thought The Clipse brought the best out of him because to be quite honest I was never blown away with his mixtapes at least off the first couple listens unlike the We Got It For Cheap mixtapes.  I’ll have to go back and give them a listen though, but hopefully he can find continued success without The Re-Up even though I would much rather seem them reunited.

Also here is a new mixtape from Boo Boonic of Most Wanted that I have been sitting on that the It’s On Freestyle reminded me of.  I finally decided to go through and fix the fucked up tracklist.  HOW TO TAG YOUR MUSIC POST COMING SOON!!!  Rappers get your flunkies to do that shit or something.  Like the dude who just wants to hang around, you know the guy who carries the weed and you send to the store to get blunts, snacks, or drinks have that dude tag your songs instead of me.

Download Mixtape: Limosa Nostra Act. 1

As I was going through and fixing the tracklisting on Boo Bonic’s mixtape I noticed Rich Hil is featured on a couple tracks.  So I figured no better time like the present to go take a look at this mixtape from Tommy Hilfiger’s son…yes you heard correctly.  I’ve heard good things though.

Download Mixtape: Mr. Pigface Weapon Waist [Explicit]

1/4 of the Slaughter from Long Beach…it’s hard to describe Crooked I at times and what exactly is his biggest strength because he is way more diverse than I originally thought and he does a lot very well.  He isn’t just your typical gangster rapper from The West Coast, he’s conscious, lyrical, funny, but still embodies that gangster West Coast shit I love.  He may be the best spitter of the group along with Joell Ortiz, but that in no way means him and Joell are the best members of the group which I have heard.  I feel like they all bring something to the group, but like I said when it comes to spitting that lyrical shit there are few better than Crooked I.  Look out for a super, mega Slaughterhouse post it’s coming…eventually.  It was funnier earlier this week someone on Facebook said they liked Young Money more than Slaughterhouse because Slaughterhouse always tries to out rap each other.  If that is true I like whatever they do more than whatever the fuck Young Money.  This is exactly why I don’t even argue with most people about music though.

The aforementioned Joell Ortiz, 1/4 of the Slaughter hailing from Brooklyn.  I think he is probably the most well rounded member of the group.  He is arguably the best when it comes to just spitting or freestyling.  As evidence from the D.O.A. (DJ Green Lantern Freestyle) that he absolutely murders below of the Cold Cuts mixtape.  I’m anxiously waiting for Free Agent to see if he is as truly talented as I think he is.

Download Mixtape: So Far Gone

I almost forgot So Far Gone dropped last year, I would be lying if I said this wasn’t a good mixtape.  It’s not so much that I hate Drake it just that I don’t think he is the second coming like so many other people.  I think he is talented and has a lot of crossover appeal, but I could argue that almost every artist in this post is better.  Plus with the exception of a few artists I typically like my rappers to rap and my singer to sing…I don’t know call me old fashion.  Also, if you want to name your album some slick ass shit like Thank Me Later and do wild ass interviews then you better deliver.  Quite frankly I don’t think he has done anything earth shattering that hasn’t been done before…I don’t know maybe i’m just getting old.  With that said I think i’m going to call this post Thank Me Later No Drake lol.

Download Mixtape: The Warm Up

I had been hearing a lot of good things about Wale prior the release of his album and I can’t remember if it was this mixtape or The Mixtape About Nothing which I first heard.  Anyway, I still wasn’t really impressed with him until the album.  How can I think so highly of the The Back To The Feature Mixtape and still make that statement?  Well that’s easy because that mixtape would have more than likely been fire without Wale.  The mixtape has so many wonderful features I even included the back cover and is also entirely produced by 9th Wonder.  I have heard good things about some of his older mixtapes so make sure you check those out along with the album too.

I used to hate on Lloyd a lot for awhile until I listened to his music and realized he is actually pretty talented.  I thought he made stupid ass R&B music like so many artists around his age, but he actually makes music well beyond his years. He is one of the few young R&B singers that I actually like and I guess it’s no surprise that he makes mixtapes as well.  I really like the Young Goldie EP, with the exception of a few tracks and that’s not even the tracks featuring Lil Wayne, Juelz, and Nicki Minaj too.

This mixtape marked the reunion of one of my favorite producers and rappers after Jada threw Green Lantern under the bus.  It’s good and I was happy to see them working together again, but I didn’t like it quite as much as the original The Champ Is Here mixtape.  Also be sure to check out the original and the third mixtape in the series with Mr. Thanksgiving along with a very good throwback mixtape.

I discovered this mixtape when I went digging through some of the best mixtapes from last year on a couple sites.  Yes, I do research shit, I am a nerd.  I heard this and instantly loved it.  I really need to find out where the sample on City Lights came from because it has been driving me crazy ever since I heard that song.

Download Mixtape: Kimbo Price (A Prelude To Mic Tyson)

I didn’t even realize that Sean Price was in Heltah Skeltah and Boot Camp Clik until I really started liking Sean Price.  I had heard of them growing up through my cousin who was very instrumental in my love affair with music, but I never really listened to a lot of their music.  I still wasn’t really a big fan of Sean Price until I saw him perform at the Styles P & Green Lantern Album Release Party for The Green Ghost Project.  After that I kind of understood him more as an artist and went digging through his great collection in preparation for the release of Mic Tyson. It looks like that shit is shelved until after the release of the Random Axe (Black Milk, Guilty Simpson, Sean Price) Album coming in October. On one hand i’m happy that album now has a release date, i’m just hoping I at least get a Sean Price album or mixtape before that.

Also here are two song Sean Price songs that always stand out to me off Monkey Barz

I had heard about Elzhi hear and there, but I always assumed he was wack and rapped about soft shit like Slum Village, whom he is now a member…umm…yeah let’s not even discuss more of my younger dumbass close minded views.  Cut to the present, Elzhi is currently one my favorite rappers…no like really.  I listened to this mixtape and Europass non-stop for a couple weeks.  He’s different than rappers I typically like as well relaxed, composed, but yet still very lyrical. He’s not all brass and in your face, but yet there is still an aire about him where he doesn’t need to say that he’s better than most rappers lol.  As a result, i’m also a big Slum Village fan these days especially after I realized J. Dilla was their producer all those years and the producer behind some of my favorite songs.  I won’t go ranting and raving about J. Dilla this and J. Dilla that because like I said I wasn’t a Slum Village fan in my younger days.  There is no way I can deny his greatness though.  I can’t wait for the Village Manifesto album along with the Elzhi solo album and the Royce/Elzhi album if that shit ever drops.

I usually tend to listen to anything a DJ I respect recommends or co-signs, because while I listen to a lot of music even I can’t be expected to know every new artist.  Since, Green Lantern is co-signing, I saw this mixtape promoted on http://www.2dopeboyz.com/ for a while, and then it was one of there top mixtapes of 2009 I decided to give it a listen.  On first listen I liked it but I wasn’t really blown away…Emilio Rojas is kind of a difficult artist to describe or maybe i’m just running out of gas.  Nonetheless, the talent was there and after seeing him perform numerous times I got a better idea of him as an artist.  I would probably agree he is one of the better new artist from NY as well.  So really all I can say is listen to the mixtape it’s deep, conscious, introverted, and yet bold and arrogant like the song.

I shouldn’t have to say anything about the Styles P or The L.O.X. at this point so I won’t.  This mixtape isn’t as good as some of his older classic mixtape, but still new Styles P is better than most of the other shit out there these.

Also check the Styles P post for some more music

Download Mixtape: Boss Of All Bosses Gangsta Grillz

I probably have more Cam mixtapes than almost any other rapper with the exception of The L.O.X. of course, I think we’ll take a look at those next with the whole Dipset Reunion making some headway.  For the record, I was always more of Cam fan than a Dipset fan, but they did put out some good mixtapes.  It’s also not really reunion if the Heatmakers aren’t involved and Bezel too really.  Early on I wasn’t a big fan of Vado, in fact, I would have preferred if this was just a Cam mixtape.  However, I think he really has improved, to the point i’m really looking forward to Slime Flu, despite the fact he just came out with the Slime Time mixtape with that fugazi ass cover.  I can only ASSUME HE DID NOT co-sign that shit.  Anyway, Vado probably should have been in the XXL Freshmen class or whatever that shit is called along with Emilio Rojas so i’ll throw them in as honorable mentions on my shit.

Ahh yes, last but not least Curren$y and Wiz Khalifa…as you might imagine I was not a fan of either of them early on…I think I mentioned that before…but fuck it.  I didn’t like their lazy flows and they don’t exactly have the widest range content either.  I’ve come to realize that’s who they are, they just make cool ass stoner music and they are great at that.  I always try to keep an open mind these days and think about an artists’ strengths and what they are good at.  Every artist is unique and makes different music…well not so much these days when everyone wants to swag it out but that’s besides the point.  Assuming an artist doesn’t flat out suck I usually give them a chance and Wiz and Curren$y definitely don’t suck.  I got to see Wiz perform in LA and he was great too, wonderful stage presence and the bitches loved him…sorry.  I had hoped to see Curren$y perform Wednesday with a couple other artists I was really excited to see, but alas I have to work.  Anyway I fucks with them both no homo and mostly everything I have listened to them from has been good.  Even I haven’t listened to there exorbitant mixtape discographies though, but I know there are a lot of fans out there of both so enjoy.
